Where's da real deal?

This week's song was supposed to be P. Ramlee's classic Madu Tiga. I wanted this song so badly because it was one of the few songs that was banned by our dear Information Ministry, but then exempted. One can't stop wondering what the relevant authority was thinking of. Censorship, of any kind, does not work.

Driftnet is UNIX/Linux clone of EtherPEG, the image sniffer for Mac. A sniffer is a program that sets your NIC to promiscous mode and err, sniff stuff from the network. That stuff is not coke. I like Vanilla Coke but that is not important. OK. A promiscous mode is when you are being naughty. This is what you get if you are naughty.



Anyway, driftnet by itself does not create a collage unlike EtherPEG. You have to use it in conjunction with WebCollage. Driftnet is also able to sniff MPEG audio stream on the network, and play it using mpg321.

I browsed jobstreet, again. One thing I found is the abundance of Java related work - programmer, developer, senior developer - all centered around the Java programming language. What happened to .Net? And the ever popular PHP? What about good old Perl?



Well, if you are an IT student reading this, remember:



Learn Java. In fact it is not Java that really matters, but it is the concept. Learn object-oriented programming and object -oriented analyis and design. Programming nowadays are getting more and more high-level - thus Java.



Take that Java class seriously. I mean, look at me - I have no Java experience save from being a non-coding one - there no place for Perl coders. And PHP's just too easy and can't cut it when you are talking about enterprise solution.

Ever wonder how an HP Technical Support Drone is like? Scripted. That is how I will describe this people. Scripted to the book. Everyhing they say is by the book. Including the punctuation. And the full stop. By. The. Book. It's like they had attended a course on how conduct proper Internet chat.



Anyway, the cdrom on my notebook decided to fux0red itself up again, 2 weeks after the warranty period is over. How nice. I mean, how just-in-time. Fucker. I know they are planning for this. I know they replaced my previous CDROM with the type that will kaput after the warranty period. Fucker.



Anyway, here's how my chat with the HP fella went. Read it bottom up. This is because HP don't know how to program web application. (I was being nice in this chat session, really)

mel m: i choose "multibay" but it stil boot directly from hdd

mel m: there will be a prompt asking me which device to boot from

mel m: after i enabled "boot from other devices"

mel m: ive also disabled fastboot and add 10 seconds delay

H****a: Thank you for the information.

mel m: i tested the cd on another computer - no problem at all

mel m: boot from other devices is not enabled

mel m: check the setting

mel m: press F10

mel m: then i reboot

mel m: it reboot straight from hdd

mel m: 3) reboot

mel m: 2) put in CD

mel m: 1) reset BIOS to default

H****a: If the issue persists, you can try booting the CD using any other computer to verify if the issue is related to the CD.

mel m: hmmm... here's what i did

H****a: No, Mel. The CD drive is configured as the first boot device in Presario Models and resetting the BIOS to its defaults would help.

mel m: resetting the BIOS to its default will not boot from a CD

H****a: Did you try resetting the BIOS to its defaults and then try booting from a CD?

mel m: yesterday

H****a: When did you first notice the problem?

mel m: yeah, reading from cd/floppies is no problem at all

mel m: now my notebook is an evo nv1000 !

H****a: Are you able to read the CDs and Floppies from Windows?

mel m: funny thing is - i've sent my notebook to the support center here (malaysia) and they've updated the bios

mel m: nope - it just boot right from harddrive

H****a: Do you encounter any error messages when you try to boot from a CD?

mel m: well, it's no big deal then -

mel m: i see
