a little bit of soap

og2html.pl is a simple script that HTML-ized the output of nmap's grepable output format (-oG). it's crude, but it works to highlight the results of a scan. sample output here (nmap -sT -P0 -p22,23,80,443,8080,110,25,53 -oG output ip-address) and here (nmap -sTV -O -T4 -oG output ip-address). to use it, just feed it the scan output file (must be -oG) and pipe it to a file: ./og2html.pl nmap-result.txt > nmap-result.html. lines, or rather, hosts that have no open ports are skipped. also, only Host: and Ports: fields are included. i was planning to write a more sophisticated script, but i totally forgotten all about perl's data structure, especially constructing and manipulating hash of hashes of hashes of hashes... heh. will announce when i've add more stuff to it, like pagination, sorting (via AJAX goodness, when i come around to learning it), and statistics (when i come around to relearning perl's data structures). listening to: three 6 mafia - let's plan a robbery

so i watched v for vendetta starring the ever-petite and significantly undernourished natalie portman, and that monosyllabic agent smith dude who realized that he hasn't talked that much as agent smith, and he decided it's best to deride the viewer (me) by spouting blowhards non-stop for 130 minutes. example:

this calls for two observations:

  • IIS is significantly less secure than apache, and windows is obviously less secure than linux (or other *nixes), but we all know that already

  • the zen-like unix philosophy produces better and secure (and beautiful - code-wise) software than the mark twainish "putting windows on every desktop in every home".


so, friends, do you practice and preach the unix philosophy?

some tips to reduce the size of your vmware image, especially thaf of windows images.


  • install xplite on the vmware guest OS. xplite can trim your windows installation significantly. on my windows xp vmware image, using the free version of xplite reclaimed about 1GB of hard disk space. the free version is able to remove unnecessary microsoft installation files. also, you can use xplite to reduce the cache size.

  • shrink your windows image. this can be done by using the vmware tools. after installing vmware tools, right-click on the vmware-tools icon, and select shrink. then shrink the virtual hard disk. ironically, shrinking the disk requires at least 30% free space on the virtual hard disk itself. i managed to reduce the size of my windows virtual disk from 3.1Gb to about 2 Gb+ after shrinking.

  • defrag often. there are two places where you can perform this - one is in the virtual image itself (using the windows defragmenter), and another is on the host OS. on the host OS, just run vmware-vdiskmanager -d [your vmware image]

  • don't keep data files on your vmware images. since i run samba on my gentoo notebook, the microsoft vmware shares files from the host OS.

the frightening reality of the fact that one day we ...

i have a few new albums and artists, but i just couldn't pick which to post. anyways: Bran Van 3000 - Drinking in LA. this song isn't the best on glee, but it became my theme song of disillusionment, and before then i wasn't even 26! (glee was released in 1997). it's a more dreamy, relaxed song about slackerism as compared to beck's robotic loser.
