i have to admit it - i've been pampered all this while by gentoo's excellent portage. installing stuff is just a single command, and everything works, almost flawlessly and perfectly. but not so on mac os x. there's the gentoo-alt prefix project, an attempt to bring portage to other linux distro. installing it on mac os x is a breeze. but after everything is installed, it's pretty much useless. there aren't even ebuilds for apache or php or mysql! gross! after spending whole morning trying to port apache2's ebuild, i just gave up. at 450 lines, its just too time consuming to make it work on mac os x. but that's gentoo - a lot of work has been done by the maintainers to make stuff install flawlessly in any combination of use flags.

so now i'm trying out macports, and so far so good.

and i've rm -rf'ed fink's /sw. fink sucks so bad it hurts.

latex-beamer is my de-facto tool for creating presentation slides. installing it on mac os x is a breeze. first of all, u need to get texlive. texlive is a kind of tetex distribution, like miktex. i decided to use texlive simply because i'm using texshop as the latex editor. to install texlive, just grab the i-Installer, and follow the instructions. this is nothing more than using double-click kung-fu and following instructions starting from here.

next, download latex-beamer, xcolor and pgf. untar them to /Library/texmf/tex/latex/{beamer, pgf, xcolor} respectively. remove the old-installation in: /usr/local/gwTex/texmf.texlive/tex/latex/{beamer, pgf, xcolor} and create links to the local textmf (sudo ln -s /Library/texmf/tex/latex/{beamer,xcolor,pgf} /usr/local/gwTex/texmf.texlive/tex/latex/{beamer,xcolor,pgf}). finally, run texhash and you're good to go!

note: if you've have a previous installation of tetex (either thru fink or darwinports), installing latex-beamer is the same except for the location of the texmf.

ipw2200 is crunk, not! the ipw2200 is being phased out from the portage tree, so you need use the in-kernel module instead. so:

(oh yeah if you've been using the portage ipw2200 from portage, just emerge -Cv your_kernel_sources && emerge your_kernel_sources and you'd be cool to go)
