The MPD (Or How My Notebook Turned Into A Jukebox)

In case you don't know, MPD allows remote access for playing music (MP3, Ogg Vorbis, FLAC, AAC, Mod, and wave files) and managing playlists. MPD is designed for integrating a computer into a stereo system that provides control for music playback over a local network. It is also makes a great desktop music player, especially if you are a console junkie, like frontend options, or restart X often.

MPD is just so cool. What makes it even better is that I am using phpMp to control the songs being played on my PC. There's also phpMp2, which has a better and nicer user interface design. And if you are a command-line junkie, there's mpc.

As a side note, if you encountered errors such as 
problems getting ao_driver_info
you may not have permission to the audio device

edit /etc/mpd.conf and set ao_driver to "alsa09" and ao_driver_options to "dev=default".

Thanks so much for this hint; you've just removed the only obstacle I've had with MPD after a long night of wrestling with another, crappier player's daemon interface -- MPD looks so much better, and it was nice that it didn't fight me every step of the way just to get the damn thing running. So. Thanks again.

You might try pitchfork as well. Really nice mpd-client.
