hey, nice app. r u going to release the source? btw, since you "wished that PPS owners have an RSS" (u probably already know this), there's a rss generator script for pps by LcF at: http://liewcf.com/wp/archives/2004/10/unofficial-project-petaling-street-rss-feed/
keep us all posted, esp if u're releasing the source.
Yay. I'd love to see how far our local blogging world can go.
Excellent effort. Thanks for your contribution to making PPS more interesting!
Ash: i reckon for every blogger that pings PPS, there are at least 10 who don't. There are a lot of Malaysian blogs out there, A LOT. PPS was never meant to be the be all and end all of Malaysian blogs -- it just happens to be a useful little tool to help make it easier to see what a "cross-section" of Malaysian bloggers are saying at any one time; having said this, i don't even think we were meant to be a real-world community, so the lack of one surrounding PPS isn't necessarily a failure -- it was just never meant to be.
Hey go easy man, thats from what I see. Alot doesn't necessarily mean everyone as well. It's just that most of them as I see and ask don't know what PPS is or what it does. I don't know that many "mature" bloggers as much as I know the newer ones. And if they don't have a need to publicize their blogs that's fine as well. I'm just still referring to those that I know about.
First of all, I did not say that non-English blogs TEND to attract less attention. I was highlighting the fact that due to PPS's ease of use, we sometimes forget there are OTHER bloggers out there who don't ping to PPS - bloggers like me, for instance.
As for bloggers who don't ping PPS, it's unfair to say they're all younger or not into blogging - notice I said some of them have been at this longer than most of us; even I would be a bit offended by that statement. They just don't feel the need to be on PPS yet. I agree with Hafiz. GengJurnal is more of a community than PPS, but this is something we can fix in the future. In the meantime, keep up the work, spoonfork. It's going to be interesting.
I set mine up to autoping PPS, but it's having none of it, it blows a big one.
PPS != community,
while GengJurnal is. they have gatherings, awards, forums and such. What i see is PPS is lacking in this department. but we are way ahed of getting ppl around the world to know about a small percentage of m'sian blogger and we are still doing it. we need to think about this...
I don't know...maybe because blogging originally started with an english medium and the net itself is built on english as a medium so everything else followed naturally from there.
Besides, Ash has a point in saying that non-english blogs tend to attract less attention than english blogs. There are alot of malaysian bloggers out there as well that do not ping PPS or even heard of PPS. Then again, they consists mostly of younger bloggers or people who aren't really into blogging much. Anyway...isn't PPS a Metablog?
yeah - i said assuming that most ppl ping pps. in fact, there's 120+ blogs in my database right now, but i also chance across 80+ local blogs that do not ping PPS.
what i am curious is that why PPS attracks english blogs....
the feed is broken - i've told LCF about it.
there's nothing much to the code atm, so i'm keeping it closed for the time being.
I would say that by using PPS as a sole reference point for deducing the growth of the Malaysian blogging scene, we are actually handicapping the results; simply because it would ignore the very numerous NON-ENGLISH bloggers out there from GengJurnal etc who do not ping to the PPS aggregator, who don't use English as a primary medium, and who most probably have been at this longer.
So whilst it would seem that we can get SOME results from the analysis, said analysis would be flawed simply because we have discounted the content/headlines/presence of a significant number of the blogging community. Hope this helps. |
