for maths, bc (use -l for mathlib/precision) is quite standard and can be simpler to use:
$ a=$(echo 1/7 | bc -l); echo $a .14285714285714285714
yeah, i know about bc (should have mentioned it). in the system that i was working on though, bc's not there! wtf???
