using EXISTS and NOT EXISTS features in MySQL 4.1, how should i construct my queries for the following scenario:

i want to update multiple records in a table if they exists, and if the record does not exists, i want to insert it.

technically something like this: insert into user(name, sex) values ('mel', 'yes please') WHERE IF NOT EXISTS (select * from user where user='mel') else UPDATE user SET name='mel', sex='male' where user='mel'

as demonstrated, i'm not good at SQL syntax, nor reading documentations. and oh please don't bother to suggest cute stuff like triggers (it's not supported in 4.1 is it?), or making me write unecessarily-unsexy codes that check if a key exists and if it does update else watever...
