The humble taugeh (bean sprouts), a popular and cheap vegetable, has not been spared the effects of spiralling prices. Widely used in hawker food and as a side dish served with salted fish, taugeh will cost 10 sen more here from Saturday. A spokesman for the state's 10 taugeh producers, Vinny Tan, said bean sprouts now cost 70 sen a kati (about 600gm) and the price would rise to 80 sen.

She said this was due to the increased cost of their most important raw material, the imported mung bean. Its price had gone up by 80% in October.
