python -c 'while 1: _import_("os").fork()'
that worked finely from command line, bring my usages up to 180++ before I was able to kill the terminal a few minutes later. yeah, I'm surprized generic forkbombing hasn't been taken care of in kernel level; it may be that its just some remedial task developers are not wanting to work on or something. there are some apps that fork substantially during work (sendmail, when sending out mails) or sshd with privsep, etc. maybe a limit on how fast apps may be able to fork itself into process may be nice though.
A way of limiting resources is usually by adding a 'ulimit -Hu 25' to /etc/profile i.e. to set a HARD limit of 25 processes/user.
