in gentoo:

portupgrade's -r and -R is similar to emerge's -u and -D. i'm not sure if freebsd has a --newuse equivalent. also, can any gentoor tell me what is freebsd's equivalent of revdep-rebuild?

if you're behind an authentication proxy (in my case, it's an ISA proxy server), you can add the following to your environment or .profile:

export FTP_PROXY=http://proxy_username:proxy_passsword@proxyhost:proxyport

that way, pkg_add, portsnap, etc will go through the proxy. curiously, setting the following environments did not work for me:

export FTP_LOGIN=proxy_username
export FTP_PASSWORD=proxy_password
export FTP_PROXY=http://proxyhost:proxyport

another note: to accept all default build options, you can add the following to /etc/make.conf
BATCH=yes

or you can do: portupgrade -a --batch

freebsd/gentoo: portupgrade -a is equivalent to emerge -u world

i have to admit it - i've been pampered all this while by gentoo's excellent portage. installing stuff is just a single command, and everything works, almost flawlessly and perfectly. but not so on mac os x. there's the gentoo-alt prefix project, an attempt to bring portage to other linux distro. installing it on mac os x is a breeze. but after everything is installed, it's pretty much useless. there aren't even ebuilds for apache or php or mysql! gross! after spending whole morning trying to port apache2's ebuild, i just gave up. at 450 lines, its just too time consuming to make it work on mac os x. but that's gentoo - a lot of work has been done by the maintainers to make stuff install flawlessly in any combination of use flags.

so now i'm trying out macports, and so far so good.

and i've rm -rf'ed fink's /sw. fink sucks so bad it hurts.

ipw2200 is crunk, not! the ipw2200 is being phased out from the portage tree, so you need use the in-kernel module instead. so:
CONFIG_IPW2200=m CONFIG_IEEE80211=y CONFIG_IEEE80211_CRYPT_WEP=y CONFIG_IEEE80211_CRYPT_CCMP=y CONFIG_IEEE80211_CRYPT_TKIP=y CONFIG_IEEE80211_SOFTMAC=y CONFIG_CRYPTO_AES=y CONFIG_CRYPTO_AES_586=y CONFIG_CRYPTO_MICHAEL_MIC=y CONFIG_CRYPTO_CRC32C=y
make && make install_modules && make install, add ipw2200 to /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6, emerge ipw2200-firmware, reboot and off you go wifiring.

(oh yeah if you've been using the portage ipw2200 from portage, just emerge -Cv your_kernel_sources && emerge your_kernel_sources and you'd be cool to go)

i haven't posted anything opensource related for a while, so here goes:

• Gnome 2.14 is out! i have been using the overlay from gentopia and the noticeable differences are the start-up speed, and performance improvements in both gnome-terminal and nautilus. other than that, everything else seems to work fine, except that that i can't change themes because whenever i do that, the themes window goes blank.


• over at gentoo there's an article about running both PHP4 and PHP5 concurrently. i decided to take an easier approach: run both php4 and php5 on separate apache instances.


• linuxlah's cara tersohor untuk install gentoo 2006.0. beyonce knowles and halle berry are hawt, but tyra banks???


• hooked on emerge and want to install web application by emerge? here's a collection of ebuild for web applications that are not in the official gentoo portage. managing overlays is quite tedious for me, so for web applications, i just install them the manual way.

question: i want to the menus (sort of like fluxbox or xfce) to appear when i right-click on the desktop in gnome. any ideas on how to do this?

other stuff: the week has been pretty tiring. james lavelle is playing a gig in KL tonight, fsck it, i'm not going. oh wait i have a better idea - mayb i should go to one of them crowded megamalls and shoot rubber pellets at random people.
